Watering 101
Plant Killers, this article is for you! Have you ever considered that you’re maybe just too attentive?! Finding the right location/light and watering are the two most important parts of plant parenting. While watering your plants may seem like a no brainer it’s often the culprit of houseplant problems. Could you be overwatering? Here are some tips and tricks for watering your houseplants.
Signs of overwatering:
- Yellowing leaves (especially old leaves!)
- Wilting
- Browning around the tips or edges of the leaf
- Musty smelling soil
- Roots that are mushy and dark in color
- Fungus gnats
Tips for watering:
- The best kind of water to use is filtered water. Rainwater is also a great option (but clearly not as accessible!)
- While distilled water may seem like a safe option, it’s missing important minerals that help your plant grow.
- If you tend to overwater, be sure to select a planter with a drainage hole.
- Soil will dry faster in a terracotta or clay pot (without glazing). These types of pottery allow for oxygen exchange.
- Give your plants a thorough water. Water until some water drains through the bottom of the pot.
- For plants with large foliage try watering from the bottom.
- Fill the bottom of your sink or tub with water. Place your plant in the basin and allow it to pull water from the bottom up. When the top of the soil feels moist drain the water basin. Then, let extra water drain from your plants.
- Choose a day of the week to water and try to stick to it!
How often to water:
- Water when the top inch or two of the soil feels dry.
- In the winter watering once a week should do the trick for most houseplants.
- As days get longer in the spring and summer you will likely have to start watering 2 times per week.
- Keeping in mind that small pots tend to dry out quicker and many always need to be watered more often!
- Remember, it’s important to replace lost nutrients! Use a water-soluble* fertilizer.
- Late Fall – Winter: Fertilize once a month
- Mid Spring – Summer: Fertilize twice a month
*Granular fertilizers will last longer. Read your label for the recommended time frame on your fertilizer.
